Oh, I've Got All Sorts of Stuff Going on...

Hello Tribe,

My name is Ahna and I'm an artist working in a wide variety of mediums. Although I do not currently sell my photography, it was my major at CCAC in Oakland, Ca. about 18 years ago (man, how time flies). Anyway, I'd like to introduce you to some of my products for use in your fashion photography in hopes of promotions to my web sites.

First up is my mineral makeup line featuring my "Intensity Eye Shadows" (TM). You will find my shadows to be intense with pigment and in a wide variety of colors and shades. Your makeup artists will love that my shadows are easy to blend and that they have staying power throughout the day. I offer samples of all my 60+ colors for just .25 cents each plus postage. I'd also be interested in talking to anyone who will be working on a photography project for publication, either in print or online, and has use for my makeup.

My makeup web site is: http://ITouchRoses.com
To order samples, please e-mail me at Ahna@ArtCreated.com

And that leads me to my jewelry line. Are you looking for some original jewelry for your models? I will "lend out" my jewelry for you to use in your shoots for a link to my web site in the publication. Please contact me for details if you are interested.

Most of my jewelry can be found at my main site: http://ArtCreated.com

Thanks for your time.
Ahna

Models and Photographers: opinion needed, glamour photography

Photographers and Models,

I am writing a process analysis essay on the process of photographing models and getting the best out of your shoot. As a photographer, I have learned the most about shooting subjects by modeling for professional photographers who knew how to direct amateur models, and from professional models that teach the craft of modeling. Please offer any advice or info about your personal process. I can use all the input to put together a sequenced process of tips of the trade that will help and inspire both professional and amateur models and photographers alike!!

Professional Photographers:
What are the key directing points you use in making your models feel natural, comfortable, and at ease.
What are some recourses that have influenced you, that you think could help others?
Preferences? Tips? Posing? Attitude?

Professional and Amateur Models:
Can you describe some experiences with photographers that have made you feel comfortable or
otherwise?
What are some strategies you use in a shoot to produce the best product?
Resources? Advice? Posing? Attitude?

Thank you so very much! any input for sharing is greatly appreciated!
Shanna

Baily Rose will be on the set with the fotoMOJO staff.

Do you want me to model for you???

Do you want me to model for you?

Thank you for reading my blog. Hope that the following information serves as some help. I'm looking to expand my portfolio (it's not ellaborately extensive but i think it's enough to stand on :) ). I'd like for my modeling to evolve to a new level. I'm fun to work with and can provide references from photographers that have worked with me at your request.

If You Are A Photographer:

Ideally I would like to do work for compensation at a reasonable rate. I'm very affordable. Just Ask. If You Would Like Me To Model TFP/TFCD Work Depending On Shoot Concept And/Or Actual Photographer I am ok with that too. It Never Hurts To Ask. :)

If You Have a Clothing and Accessory Company
If You Would Like Me To Model Your clothing/apparel and or accessory lines I'd be more than happy to discuss that as well... Please Contact Me Regarding Compensation. However, more than likely I'll be a happy girl trading time for merchandise. But, again it never hurts to ask.

Aberrant behavior-auditions saturday the 19th 2263 mission (between 18th & 19th) 3:30-6:30 (Also looking for crew)

'm making a film, that will be somewhat explicit in parts. Also, there will be imagery that needs nudity.
I am afraid that I will not be able to cut the content of the movie script, even if I find actors interested .You can e-mail me with rates, photos, questions, etc. If your an actor or actress who has worked in nudity and/or sexual situations, is comfortable with it, and would like to take on a feature narrative film as a major role please e-mail me or show up to the auditions. The two main roles are the ones that require it but there are others. If you would like to be featured in sequences that do not involve the main characters, but are part of dreamlike imagery (that features nudity/partial nudity)you can either show up to the audition, or e-mail me with link to your work. Best place to e-mail:
theperiodmovie@yahoo.com

Here is the plot:
Aberrant Behavior, is basically about two self destructive anarchistic-y street kids who have an exaggerated form of pica, a disorder where people feel compelled to eat non-food materials, carpet, dirt, soap, drano, various chemicals, etc. as portrayed as a drug addiction. Who are in a very self destructive relationship, there perfect for each-other except they literally kill each-other by being together. A lot of psycho-sexual/self mutilation-masochism in this one. There's more to it, but that's the basic synopsis.

Keep in mind the budget of this movie will probably stay around 25-35, 000 dollars (already secured), so just warning I can't pay the highest rates

Thanks-
Jason
Aberrant Behavior, is basically about two self destructive anarchistic-y street kids who have an exaggerated form of pica, a disorder where people feel compelled to eat non-food materials, carpet, dirt, soap, drano, various chemicals, etc. as portrayed as a drug addiction. There's more to it, but that's the basic synopsis. If you can't make it to the auditions, you can send me a head shot with resume, or whatever you want. We can then decide when and where to meet.

I will be hiring for many roles, all ages (over 18) races, sizes, etc. But here are the main characters:
Main Characters:
Victor Muertos: (Mid to late twenties) Half Mexican/Half white (Half latino/half white will probably work). Black hair, down to chin and five o clock shadow. (Flexible though). Tall and thin but not too thin.
Dark, brooding, depressed, prone to long winded sarcastic, cynical rants. Living off the state for mental depression, and addiction, but eventually breaks himself from the state. He hates the state, and normal life in general. He hates almost everything. He is sort of sloppy hipster, slightly emo, slight slight slight goth meets street kid. Light or no body mod, piercings, etc. He eventually lives on the street because of choice. He falls in love with Aiko.

Aiko Zumbi (18-early twenties or look like it) Half Japanese/Half German (or Japanese, or half Japanese/Half white). Shorter than Victor, thin but still slightly curvy.
Street kid with a bit of dark hippie. Has been sexually abused as a child. Prone to violence. Prone to long winded rants, or sometimes just total silence. Dark, cynical, with a very bleak view of life. Body mods, tattoo's, piercings, fine. Dreaded or colored hair fine as well. Actually preffered.
She falls in love with Victor.

Emma May (20's to 30's) Actress must be thin, because character is anorexic. Very fake, superficial, manic laughing. Very self deluded. She doesn't really see her anorexia as a problem, she think she looks great though she's obviously dieing and goes to extremes to keep herself thin. She is always dressed up elegantly and thinks of herself as a proper lady even when doing something grotesque . She is a head executive at a advertising/pr firm that she gets a Victor a brief job at, through meeting him in a class over there mutual addictions. (Brief Nudity /Partial a few times)

Caseworker Joe (30's-40's) Written has hispanic, but open. Larger guy, tall, built like a shed, a bit fat but not flabby fat. Very coarse, to the point, direct "Take no shit" kind of guy. Very normal, buys into the whole big house in the suburbs, good job, etc. He is Victor's Caseworker, and is tired of Victor's Shit, and believes he is not trying to quit. (None)

Glitters- a gay gangster rapper, take everything that's a cliche and horrible about it and flip it so that it's gay (some, will also need male models)

Pedida Muertos-Victors Mother. A nearly catatonic morally apprehensive drug addict who's always sleeping with random guys and ignoring her child (Some nudity/sexual situations can be negotiated to less)

And then random visuals, nudes for some flashback scenes (of some sort of psuedo porn the main characer shot) a girl that Victor sleeps with before he falls in love with Zumbi (requires brief nudity/sexuality) and some body part imagery that will not feature the face of the actor/actress, among other thing

I need before I even start:
Prostethetics/Makeup- There are many parts of my movie that need gore, ghoulish makeup or creating body casts for dreamlike effect (like a scene where they fall onto the ground and break like porcelain blood-paint spraying out of them creating a heart) but most importantly I need someone who can help make someone look anorexic, eye sockets reccessed , hips sticking out, ribs sticking out, shoulder blades, etc. I can't start without this because it's one of the main characters.

Boom-I have someone lined up for operating boom/mixing sound, but I'm not sure he'll always be available. I need someone who has at least some experience in this to help. I have equipment but having (better?) equipment would be great.

Props- It would be great to have someone who can assist in creating edible (or non toxic) chemicals, substances, materials for the main characters to ingest. It would also free me up to think about other things.

Lighting/ Art Department/ Set Design/Decoration/Locations- I need someone who can do a lot without a lot who can work with unusual materials. Who isn't too expensive or I won't be able to afford you. Also may be able to transform other locations into desired location.Things needed for instance underground bomb shelter turned into run down sorta apartment. Abandoned buildings. Offices. Fashion Show. A sewer, where the characters live in and eat off of trash.

Original posting:

Set Decorators/Builders:
Though the majority of the movie will be in real locations. There will be a few sets built, and sets that will be decorated to fit the movie. I am looking for people who have experience building sets (theater experience would be great) on a low budget. Resourcefullness in materials is needed (Meaning you can do a lot with not a lot). Building flats, painting, decorating.

Prosthetics/ Make-Up: Though this is not a gore horror movie. There is quite a few instances of gore. People who have experience in mold making, prostethics, sculpture. etc. would be very helpfull. Also people good at making people looking sickly or malnourished through make-up needed. In addition Emma May, the severe anorexic will need added pieces to protrude her brows and jaw, her ribs, collar bones, hip bones, etc to make herself appear much thinner. Actually a lot of make up needs from simple to complex through out the movie.

Vfx-Compositors- Though this will not be a special effects epic, there will be things needed. Good flashy two animations/composting for some of the fake commercials/promos. Possible fire and underwater animation. Some manipulation of the video -color fluctuations, shrinking an enlarging, simple morph effects, color globules to represent visual aberrations in the characters eye-sight. Some 3-D needed especailly those who are good working with modeling human figures. But mostly more simple 2-D basic 3-D stuff. I may do this myself, but send me a link to your work, and I might hire you for the movie.

Props: I will be doing much of this myself, but may need help in re-creating chemicals, materials, such as drano, soap, dirt, carpet, many other instances through-out the script, to create realistic looking edible (or at least non toxic ) substitutes for the substances they swallow.

Mechanical/Puppetry- Not needed for a lot of the movie. But there is a few scenes with Emma Mays giant snake like tape worm that slithers around. Also a scene where skull bowls start vomiting (have to read script to explain) Could do myself, just seeing if anyone else might be interested.

Lighting Designer: Though I will likely take over this role myself, and a lot of the footage will be shoot in the streets style. There will be a few locations that will be staying in for a long while in the script, and would like good, stylized lighting for maximum creepy effectiveness.

Costume: I already have a few people on board for this, but as this movie ends in a big Valentines Day Fashion Show. I am looking for people who could be commisioned for clothing for that event (and other sequences in the movie as well). Also, previously made pieces could work.

Underwater Camera- Anyone who would like to rent me an underwater camera, or who has experience filming underwater, this is needed for a few sequences.

Boom Mic/ Sound Mixer- I already have someone onboard for this, but never hurts to have a second position, or a backup

Pyro/ Fire Safety/Explosion - This really isn't needed for a lot of the movie. But there is one scenes where a whole room catches on fire (with possible stuntman that catches on fire, I made do this in special effects). There is another scenes where a home-made bomb blows a crack into a wall and makes it crumble. I want these scenes to come off effective and safe.

Security- Not throughout the whole movie, but there will be scenes where I will be filming in potentially dangerous locations, and a climax that will need crowd control

Legal/ Locations- I will probably do this myself, but if anyone has experience in finding or knowing of great locations, or securing permits for locations. I might be interested in working with you.

Production Assistants/Co-Ordinaters (I am sure you know what this means)

Music- I have most of the music worked out. But a band fell out that I really felt I needed for some sequences. If your music is post -rocky, slow core or has that aphex twin meets godspeed you black emperor I may be interested. The kind of bands I'm looking for: Mew, Godspeed you black emperor, Explosions in the sky, Spiritualized, 65 days of static, Sigur Ros. Also in some music Portis-Heady could work.

Thanks
-Jason

I just wanted to drop you guys a line to say goodbye and thanks for having me!

Some of you may know that the video game company I worked for ran into some financial trouble and laid off most of its staff right before the E3 Expo. Crystal Dynamics in the Bay Area (Soul Reaver: Legacy of Kain, etc) made me an offer a few weeks ago. I start working on a super secret project right after 4th of July weekend.

Although I will still be coming up to Seattle from time to time to perform with my burlesque troupe (glitzkriegburlesque.com) and to visit friends, I just ran through and removed myself from all Seattle tribes until such a time as I can move back.

In the meantime, you can see my latest photos on Sin Garden (singarden.com) and semi-daily journal on my personal domain (josienutter.com).

Thanks! :)

Female mixed media artist searching for new model

My name is Nina Pak, I'm a mixed media artist living in the Phoenix Arizona area.
I have an upcoming show in the fall. I am currently looking for new models. The body of work I am currently doing will be large photo transfers onto canvas or paper, which I will paint on. The work I require of a model will be a photo session.
I will then work from thses images. You must be 18 years or older. I prefer someone who is not shy about thier body and willing to model nude or drapped, although some costumes will be used. No previous model experience is necessary. I like someone who can move freely, dancers are welcome. Also someone who is able to take direction is welcome.
It is not nessasary that you are "Pretty" (a fashion magazine type). I like flaws and diversity, I like an unusual look. I would also enjoy photographing more ethnic types. You don't need to be tall, it doesn't matter for the kind of work I do.
I work mostly with women, but would be willing to photograh men if thier look inspires me.
I work fast, I perfer natural light, I create a comfortable environment.
My usual arriangement is a trade of prints for your time. I require a signed model release.
I'm generous with my models.
Thank you, please message me on my Tribe page and leave a contact number.

Street Fashion Website

I just started a world wide street fashion website and im looking for contributors from all over the world. My interpretation of Street Fashion is not just the populat japanese trend but anything and everything people come up with that is an infusion of creativity, taste and indivuality. The photos dont need to be high quality professional.. in fact id prefer they were photos of people walking down the street in their daily clothing being caught off guard. Once the site has more content it will be a hub for traveling to these places featured with street fashion, rescources for cheap hostels, boutiques in the area with modern or vintage clothing, advice for beauty and fashion and a forum for people to talk about their cities and styles. Contributions are unpaid unfortunately for now, Im a college student myself jsut experimenting with an idea; but if you have a love of fashion and new and creative ideas and designs, please hlep us out!!!

Ciao!!

I want to capture more then sex, I want to capture sensuality. I want those moments of passion before sex or that connection between the eyes right befor you kiss. I am also looking for women who might want to be paired up or single women that I can photograph nude, clothed, and I would love to find a girl with a natural, full bush. I am looking for size 6 or smaller for now. I will be putting out posts for other sizes later. serious inquiries only please! Thanks and I look forward to it!

Reality talent that's not so talented

A while ago I posted something about America's Next Top Model and how I thought it was a poor representation of what actually happens in the fashion industry. My main point was that it would be dumb for a photographer, mua, designer, stylist, etc. not to work with the models on the show becuase it is a great marketing tool, but my issue with America's Next Top Model is I would shoot 98% of the models that have been on my show because thay aren't reflective of what will help build my fashion book.

Not only that I have permission to view the new faces division of a couple of fashion agencies on modelwire and they type of girls that are listed are just stronger than the models on ANTM. So here is part of an article that appeared in the New York Times today.

Here is part of the article that illustrates my point....

"A separate antagonism has surfaced on the contest shows, including "American Idol, " "America's Next Top Model, " "Project Greenlight" and "Project Runway." This is the conflict between host and winner. Tyra Banks, the impresario of "Top Model, " has distanced herself from the models her show purports to reward. Simon Cowell, who is the face of "American Idol, " has openly expressed his disdain for the hugely popular runner-up Clay Aiken. And Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, the actors who created "Project Greenlight, " have conceded that the writers and directors they hyped on the show didn't quite demonstrate greatness."

Why do I bring this up? I see the popularity of America's Next Top Model has created this idea that "anyone" can be a model and that is not the case. Just walk into one of the major fashion agencies in LA, New York, or SoBe and they'll tell you whether or not you are a fashion model or not. The world is full of 5'10"/115-120 lbs girls that didn't make it at far as someone like Iman, Janice Dickenson, Gia, Giselle, etc. What results, is young girls spending money and time on something that didn't work out. In the worst case, they are taken advantage of financially or mentally by people preying on their dreams. If someone would have been honest with them about the chances of them becomeing successful, then maybe they would have done something else.

The NY times article is below, but I only chose a specific part of the article to illustrate a more general idea and how it relates to what I have written in previous posts.

The fashion industry is a business and a business has to make money in order to survive and it survives by having talented people.

Now, watching people be miserable and fail just makes good sense for TV along with giving people false hope that they can do someting that aren't ready for. It makes good sense because that is what people like to watch the more people that watch, the higher the ratings, and the higher the profit.

The article...

Fashion's Reality Star Faces the Real Thing
By VIRGINIA HEFFERNAN

Reality television has created some exciting antagonisms. On the notionally verité shows ("An American Family," "The Osbournes," "The Anna Nicole Show," "Breaking Bonaduce"), the turbulent relationship between producer and stars is intriguing: the producers need the stars to act up without self-destructing, and the stars need the producers to give their instabilities context, visibility and parameters. HBO's outstanding tragicomedy "The Comeback" cleverly dramatized this tense interdependence.

A separate antagonism has surfaced on the contest shows, including "American Idol," "America's Next Top Model," "Project Greenlight" and "Project Runway." This is the conflict between host and winner. Tyra Banks, the impresario of "Top Model," has distanced herself from the models her show purports to reward. Simon Cowell, who is the face of "American Idol," has openly expressed his disdain for the hugely popular runner-up Clay Aiken. And Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, the actors who created "Project Greenlight," have conceded that the writers and directors they hyped on the show didn't quite demonstrate greatness.

Tonight, Bravo gets sparks from that friction. "Project Jay," a special spun off from "Project Runway," follows one of these contest winners post-show, just at the point that the contest's host — in this case, the rosy German model Heidi Klum — is dropping him like a wet rag.

Round, wisecracking, talented, grandiose, Jay McCarroll won "Project Runway," the fashion-designer contest, in its first season. Jay designed layered streetwear that seemed high-spirited and well conceived, even as he fretted, bad-mouthed the competition and acted as if he did everything at the last minute. The judges and Ms. Klum all hailed Jay as the next big thing; the "Project Runway" season ended with Jay's excitement and plans to create a complete collection.

On tonight's program, we open on Jay as he cynically rehashes his triumph and reluctantly prepares to leave his hometown, Lehman, Pa. Jay, who dresses himself in head scarves and ponchos and homeless-looking getups that recall ZZ Top, styles himself as a hick, and his town is inarguably rural. His father, though on dialysis, chews tobacco; the outside of the family's truck is stained with juice and chaw. He thinks Jay's a sissy. Jay's sister is equally tough. She sees him off unsentimentally as he leaves for New York: "See ya, I wouldn't want to be ya."

After Lehman, New York City seems like a world of hugs and big love. A friend offers Jay a place to stay in Park Slope, Brooklyn, and he gets no end of useful, if canned, encouragement from Ross, his licensing agent, and Nancy, his publicist. Who needs family if you have a licensing agent?

The drama kicks off at Lucky Strike, the restaurant on Grand Street, where Nancy tells Jay that Ms. Klum wants him to design a dress for her to wear on the red carpet for the Emmys. Jay is restrained; he wonders if he's up to this kind of formalwear. He's further daunted after a conversation with Ms. Klum, who wants to wear red, which Jay thinks is a mistake. Ms. Klum tells him to do what he wants: "I want it to be obvious that I'm wearing you." Jay falls in line, buys fabric and concocts a tabloid-ready red dress with much agony and indecision. Throughout the show, he talks about the dress and takes obvious pride in the commission. He's about to make his name and cement his stardom.

The pleasure of "Project Jay" is in Jay's caustic, self-savaging throwaway lines. He imagines that he'll get by in New York, "even if I have to sell my sperm, or hook." And further wonders if he'll bottom out and "break my lease and become a cutter."

"Physically, I hate myself," he says, and sings: "Who lives in a blobular vessel? I do, I do." He wonders how life would have been different if he had been handsome, and decides he would have been stupid and dead of AIDS.

Under the wire, the dress is nearly done. And then a call comes from a representative for Ms. Klum. In nauseating double-speak, Jay is informed that the model will not wear his dress because some Sanhedrin of style has spoken: "They all felt she should go in more of an earth mother direction," the factotum tells Jay. "They've all decided that she's going to go with a different dress."

Jay tries to shrug it off, then cries. Later Ms. Klum calls him, and is faintly apologetic. She had not been a good customer, she says, because she had just given birth, which meant — by some logic — that she had to go with a floral dress and not the red one she had asked for. Jay listens neutrally, then mentions his forthcoming fashion show. He wonders aloud whether she, who ushered this Pennsylvania boy into the big fashion world, will be there.

"I'll definitely try," she says, every word sounding hollow.

Hmm. And will Bravo, which has its chief stake in Heidi Klum's bigger show, allow this display of her callousness to appear on her program's spinoff, "Project Jay"? Apparently so, as it's here tonight.

Project Jay

Bravo, tonight at 11, Eastern and Pacific times; 10, Central time.

A co-production of Miramax Television and the Weinstein Company and Bravo.

WITH: Jay McCarroll.

some info

I have some time write some things I've learned, but some are just helpful hints.

For digital workflow, I do the following.

- shoot in RAW+.jpeg mode (smallest .jpeg setting)
- I burn the images from the memory card to a CD and then copy them to a portable hard drive.
- once I am done shooting, I rename the images in a batch rename program like "Bulk Rename Utility" that I d/l from tucows.com.
- I create a folder name with my corresponding project number that has folders called, originalraw, originalweb, working, finalprint, finalweb.
- I take the images from the originalweb folder and resize them using the batch utility canon's software package. I load them to my coppermine gallery so the team can view/comment on them. I create a username/pwd for each user and setup the permissions so people can't see each others images. This allows people to look at the images at their leisure or for a model to give the agent access to images.
- Once I and the others decide which images to use, I edit them in canon software and PS. I am still on version 6.0. Takes less RAM space to use.
- My working files are .psd files with various adjustment layers.
- Once I am done I save the .psd file and then make the images for printing. I don't resize my working files because different people need different prints.
- I burn the project folder to a CD/DVD and deliver whatever images are needed.

Film workflow is more of a pain for me because I don't have a good way to get the film into digital form, but that may change soon. I'm still playing with a workflow that suits me.

A few other things that have really helped...

- I had a seamstress stitch and surge a 9' wide fabric background so I can use it for travel and Downy's wrinkle release works wonders when you stretch the fabric between something like a portable background stand.

- Tamarac's cyberback is nice for traveling. I can most a Digital SLR and a MF camera along with a laptop and a bunch of accessories into a backpack.

- If you are shooting a fashion show or a special event, a stroboframe flash bracket is good for keep the flash centered over the camera.

- Since I was shooting a lot of events, I bought a 580 ex. The stroboscopic mode freezes motion and allows slower shutter speeds. In order to diffuse the flash I cut a rectangle section of that plastic diffuser material used to diffuse kitchen light and taped it over the flash. For further diffusion, I bought an omnibounce diffuser.

The most important thing I realized was how to learn, improve, and determine where my images fit. I attribute my approach to image creation from my grandfather (a fine art landscape photographer) and grandmother (an oil painter) of who drilled fine art into me combined with a post modern writer course I took at Georgia Tech where I studied Cindy Sherman and Barbara Kreuger.

Thus, ends my short journey into commercial photography and my continued path as an Engineer. I am still going to shoot for the select group of people I have networked with and like my style, but on my own time and terms. This way I can continue with my style, can enjoy shooting, and do it when I want.

I've been asked to do this test shoot with a fashion designer. It's not paying, but would be great exposure for me. They want to use a few very professional models, and a race car.

I've never shot any cars before, and I'm not sure what kind of lenses to rent for a shoot like this. I don't have a lot of details on the location yet, as I just got word of it today. But if it's outdoors, as I think it's safe to assume it is, then what kind of lighting should I consider for shoot like this? Reflectors, assistants, all that. This is definitely larger scale than anything I've worked on, and I don't want to fuck it up. But I also don't want to pass up the opportunity.

I ask because this is my area of expertise and I want to start offering it at a lower rate to up and coming photographers.

Hello, my name is Bryan Crump. I am new to the site. I am a photographer and bodypainter as well as an artist. I just wondered how many people have used bodypainting makeup combined with fashion. I know some people have done one or the other but curious how many maybe mix the two.

I have some samples of my work in my photo album here, some is on my website http://www.bryancrump.com and the rest on a few portfolio sites like http://www.modelmayhem.com/bodypainter

How many people use model mayhem and onemodelplace to market their work?

Sincerely,
Bryan Crump

some good information..

Here is another reason why I started my own group. I was tired of people being so condescending for no good reason at all. If you read the thread you will see where the photographer's former agent speaks up about his work, but people continue to attack his reputation. The agent further explains and validates his experience and tearsheets.

Instead of a discussion, someone finds a mistake on the photographers site and then the sarcasm and condescending remarks follow...For me, it's quite disturbing reading some of the comments.

http://www.duroi.com/fashionforum/index.cgi/read/8774

The photographer making the original post has some valid points about photographers and models. From my experience, I understand his point of view and his frustration. I selected some things I felt were important....

"Photographers used to care about the images they shoot knowing that each click of the shutter can be and should be magic. Now all of it is just throw away pixels. There is no staying power and when photographers are all "fixing" their images in "post" what is the point of collaborative creativity. When you are shooting all the while knowing that you are going to manipulate it later...is this really photography or a computer-generated work of art. Instead of calling this photography one should call it multi media."

I think with the invention of digital photography, photographers are getting lazy, by trying to "fix" too many things in post-production like bas skin, makeup, lighting. I still shoot Medium Format 645 with a mamiya and 6by6 with a Yashica TLR and my approach is no different when shooting with my 20D. I still take my time to plan shots and look for what poses work with a model and what don't.

One of the things I love about Photoshop is the ability to take a raw image and further develop it in Photoshop by using PS as a virtual photolab. You can still meter an image at ISO1600, set the camera ISO on 400, and use raw editing software (i use canon's software) to push the image into proper exposure and get a grainy effect. Crossprocessing, solarizing, B&W, sepia toning, hand coloring, etc can be done in Photoshop, which I think is great. Hazzardous darkroom chemical are not for me, especially after seeing another photographer die from complications to a darkroom accident.

"Recently I contacted a model about doing a 6-10 page spread for one of the many magazines that I photograph for and she boldly told me that she didn’t work for magazines that couldn’t afford to pay their models. She probably had her head in the clouds having recently shot for Playboy. I told her that magazines like that have to pay the models to take off their clothes and also mags like that offer little to no exposure to the model(other than the obvious, no pun intended). "

One of the biggest mistakes models make is shooting themselve in the foot or biting the hand that feed them and they usually do it in favor of money without care for a longer term goal. Fashion editorials are not the place to make money, but getting published helps get the paying commercial work. I think the day rate for the Sports Illustrated models is $225 or something small like that, but after the swimwear edition comes out, models sign million dollar contracts. He has a point about playboy, and as far as I know the editorial rate for most fashion magazine work is $0.00. I am suprised he could find a model that has been in playboy that has a suitable fashion look.

"If you are a new model, hire a professional photographer!
If you are a new photographer, hire a pro model! "

The importance of this can not be overstated. The first few models I ever photographed, I payed them. Why? I was a new photographer. When models are to select a photographer, find a reputable one that will shoot what you need. Also, be realistic with your look, height, weight, and measuremets. Paying a significant amout of money for a portfolio isn't a good idea if your chances of making become a fashion model are slim. Agencie are full of 5'10, 115-120lbs models that are 15-19 so before you decide to start modeling do your research and make sure you pick the right market appropriate for your look and body type. Maybe you are more suited for a commercial market...maybe fine art nudes.....or glamour...etc. If there is a good market for your look then pay a professional to get decent images.

"'Testing' used to be an important tool for a photographer, makeup artist, hair stylist, clothing stylist, and model to get together and create something amazing. Now models, makeup, hair and clothing people all don’t want to create...they want to get paid. They have little to no experience but have a web presence on OMP or the like and believe that since they have this that they no longer have to "sink or stoop" to doing editorial. "

Notice he called it "testing" and is one of the most important parts of fashion because it allows people to create images for the book that aren't guided by strict requirements of assignment shooting. Another word for this is called "creatives" or "creative shoots."

TFP, TFCD, etc....aren't terms that are used because in a true test most people have to purchase prints from the photographer and the only images given on a cd are the origianl low resolution web images only for viewing to select print. Some photographer post/print conctact sheets and make people select image by looking sheets through a loupe.

If you are a model, makeup artist, hair stylist, etc and a photographer charges you for prints, don't be shocked. With my tests, I usually give the team the electronic file, but the talent I test with is exceptional so I want to give them something as a thanks. As a professional courtesy, I'll give an agency model one print and usually the other team members one as well.

Remember the whole point of testing is to establish realionships with others and network so you build a network of talent to work with as paying assignement come in. Testing is a continuos process and typically it takes about 4-5 years to get a decent fashion book when just starting out.

One thing that you will find is each photographer will test diffferently so find one that you will work well with.

Lastly, people always ask me how I started in fashion......Basically all the glamour models (at the time I didn't know the difference between fashion and glamour) want ed something like $150.00/hr with something like a 4 hour minimum. This was insane. The tall lanky fashion models were so much more receptive to me, but more importantly seemed to understand what I was trying to do and they were just as motivated as I was to create good images.

Happy New Year and be safe.
Tom Ford at Estee Lauder

Andre Leon Talley (A.L.T.) interviewed Tom Ford in a recent Vogue article. Tom Ford has been lead on a project for Estee to revamp the youth dew scent in a special edition scent with touches of patchouli. Look for the scent in coming months.

Another project he is working on is a store front men's collection.

An intresting side note about Tom Ford is that A.L.T. mentioned he is a micromanager and a control freak. I like his designs and what he was able to do at Gucci and Yves St. Laurent, but working for a control freak and a micro manager is never fun...lol..but as a former couture designer for two traditional (one Italian & one French) houses, I can understand the need for attention to details.

Canon rebates and more

For most of the fashion work I do, I use my 18-55mm lens (not the kit lens), but if you are looking to buy new lenses or a digital SLR, Canon is offering rebates.

http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controller?act=PromotionsAct&fcategoryid=113

I pretty much use my 20D for everything but fine art. One thing to keep in mind for those people that own Medium Format film cameras - one of the photographers I know that is regularly published in fashion magazines and makes his living as a fashion photographer is most of his fashion clients still want chrome or film.

I'm not shooting ad campaigns and don't have any major fashion clients so this isn't an issue and the agencies really don't care what you use as long as the models get quality images so they can use them.

With the digital SLR's, I've been able to find some used Medium Format equipment that I could find 2-3 years ago like a 105mm-210mm zoom lens for my Mamiya 645.

For now I like my 20D and still use my Medium Format camera, but I've been waiting for Mamiya to release ZD. However keep in miond that capturing a 22MP image in raw yeilds a 40 MB RAW file. The reccomended RAM space for Adobe PS CS is about 328MB so as the Pixels go up so does the need for computing prefromance. Once you add adjustment layers and do the post production work the file size goes up. With the large file sizes, you will also need mass storage devices to back up your data.

If there are photographers in this group that have gone to the 22MP captuer with the D SLR or Digital back then maybe they can share a workflow.

Anyway, just food for thought.

Critiques

I posted this on my fashion photography group on myspace.com so I'll post it here as well.

One of my friends asked me why I don't solicit critiques from people about my images. I do have people critique my images, but I am selective.

Typically, I find that with fashion, most people critique images based on their idea of what a fashion image is supposed to look like and aren't very objective. In addition, very few people give helpful suggestions about images that will help me grow as a photographer. Some comments from other forums have been downright rude.

One of the motivations for creating this group is to have people network and help each other in creating fashion images. Most of the critiques I offer to other people are more of "how I would shoot the image differently." From this, they might be able to see a different perspective on how an image is viewed. For beginners, I try to focus on the positive aspects of their skills with the realization that as they get more experience some of the mistakes made will be corrected.

Not only does this provide insight into a different approach to the same image and positive reenforcement, there aren't comments like, "The model needs to lose 15 pounds" or "That dress looks like it came from k-mart."

If you work in this business you will hear far worse, but I would like this group to be a place where this type of behavior doesn't occur and a place where people can post their images and so they don't feel attacked or invalidated.
2006 Calendar Shoot, Models Wanted

I'm putting together a calendar for 2006 featuring friends, acquaintances, and tribe people in and around the SF Bay Area. I'm searching for girls that don't look like a swamp monsters, possess the ability to return phone calls and have a remote sense of style. Prior modeling experience is not necessary, but it certainly doesn't hurt. I have done a handful of shoots already, and here are some examples (pre-photoshop).

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v283/mxrickets/Christy/Christy1030.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v283/mxrickets/Christy/Christy1025.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v283/mxrickets/Britney/Britney1054.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v283/mxrickets/Britney/Britney1038.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v283/mxrickets/Theresia/Theresia018.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v283/mxrickets/Theresia/Theresia041.jpg

The purpose of this calendar shoot is:
1. I'll have finished a large creative project for my portfolio by year's end
2. I'll have a cheap and easy christmas gift to give out to my friends.

The photo shoot will be held in Fremont or Sunnyvale if we agree on a studio shoot. Outside shoots will depend on the location, obviously. I can't do this project alone, so I'm enlisting the help of my friend and collaborator, David. He'll be helping me with editing, setup and shooting. The calendar itself will be created and sold off cafepress.com to save me time and money. All models featured in the calendar will receive a free copy of the finished calendar as a thank you. The shoot will be tfcd (Time For CD) because I"m a broke college student. Your costume will depend on what you have already, or what you're willing to buy. Since you're basically doing this shoot for free, I'm giving you large amounts of creative input to the shoot. I want you to OWN the month you're featured in and want you to be happy with the final product. I really only need one visually interesting shot for the calendar, but I'm more than willing to do any other type of shot that you'd be interested in for your own portfolio.

The calendar will be non-nude, but I'm not exactly shooting an amish calendar either. I will not tell you to do anything you're not comfortable with, but letting me know what you're willing to do and what you're not willing to do during the interview process will be mutually beneficial. I'm pushing for sultry, but I will do my best to make you feel comfortable. Which means if you'd like to bring a friend along with you to the shoot to feel safe, be my guest. Boyfriends are not allowed. There's two photographers involved with this shoot already, I don't need ANOTHER director with his own agenda.

If you're interested, please contact me via email with the subject line of "2006 Photoshoot" (mxrickets@sbcglobal.net) so we can exchange numbers, set up a time/date for an interview, figure out an outfit/location, take test shots, and plan a date for your shoot.
